An Introduction to FITAS

The FCS Installer Training & Accreditation Scheme (FITAS) has been created to provide a facility for the installers of communications equipment into vehicles to demonstrate their knowledge, ability and commitment to continued learning and best practice. Aimed at installers of all types of communications equipment into vehicles, the quality assured accreditation scheme goes live in January 2009 and is
designed to reflect the high professional standards the industry seeks to uphold.

FITAS has been developed in response to industry demand and aims to set the standard for individual and company-based installers throughout the UK. FITAS will enable them to demonstrate their compliance to the industry code of practice, FCS 1362. It replaces the current Silver Award Scheme, established in 2002.

As the accreditation is based upon the principles of the industry ‘best practice’ standard FCS1362 (formerly MPT1362) it covers the same scope of activity:

· Mobile Phone (GSM and 3G covering mobile phones and PDAs)

· Business Radio (including Emergency Services)

· Telematics (e.g. navigation, tracking and data systems)

Membership of the FITAS programme is through on-going monthly membership fees - please see the 'FITAS Installers, What's Involved?' page for details.

The scheme is being supported by manufacturers and industry organisations including Motorola and the Association of Car Fleet Operators (ACFO) and, as was the Silver Award Scheme, will continue to be recognised by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and Ofcom as an example of good business practice.

"As one of the UK's largest car kit and telematics national installation companies, Avian Mobile fully supports the FCS in its aim to launch a standard that is both respected by those in the industry and ultimately insisted upon by customers and organisations that require the services that fall within its scope."
