Ofcom yesterday published a statement finalising the detail of its implementation of new customer protection rules arising from the UK’s adoption of the European Electronic Communications Code.

The new material published yesterday includes the final wording of the versions of the General Conditions which will be implemented successively on: 31st December 2020, 17th December 2021, 17th June 2022 and 19th December 2022.

The changes coming into effect from 31st December are minor – with most of the substantial changes to customer protection rules being implemented in December 2021 and June 2022. The final changes, due in December 2022 relate to the regulation which will apply to the new Ofcom mandated customer switching process. The new switching process will be the subject of a further consultation early in the new year.

FCS met with Ofcom earlier this week to discuss the implementation timetable, interpretation of some of the new terminology and application of the new regulation. We will be providing members with detailed guidance based on this advice and this newly published material in due course. We are aiming to issue this updated guidance during January.
