Industry Insight: Thoughts on Data Used for Operational Communications

By Tim Cull, FCS Head of Regulatory Affairs

It is well accepted that the demand for applications, entertainment and commerce is already high, still growing and showing few signs of slowing down.  The systems that are being rolled-out and used by everyone have to be regularly upgraded.  It is a vibrant area of activity.

But in this article, I want to focus on a limited segment of these data-driven activities.  The segment I think is the most interesting is the use of data systems in operational communications; the communications supporting safety-related, mission critical and business critical activities.

Yes, of course, this is a very long-established sector in the voice arena.  The whole country is covered by one such system or another.  There are thousands of them.  You tend not to see them as their job is to keep things working.  If the general public notice it being used, it is most likely to be because something major has gone wrong.   So, we don’t want much in the way of visibility.
